Process to become a CUSP

Process for becoming a Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)                         cusp-logo-sm

The CUSP program offers two levels of certification.  The CUSP-Blue is intended for front-line safety leaders...typically (but not limited to) Supervisors, Foreman and Operations Management. The CUSP-Green certification is intended for Utility Safety Directors and Managers.

  1. Review the CUSP BLUE PREP or CUSP GREEN PREP requirements and determine if you're eligible.

  2. Once you've determined eligibility, simply complete the online application form and submit payment via our secure system. There are substantial discounts for those who choose to join the Utility Safety & Ops Leadership Network (USOLN).

  3. USOLN board members will review the application and determine if you're eligible to take the exam. In the event you are not eligible a full disclosure of reasons for denial will be sent to you.  Once approved to take the exam you will be notified of dates and locations. An exam invitation will be sent to you with dates and location of the next CUSP exam.

  4. Prepare for taking the CUSP exam by reviewing the guidelines CUSP BLUE PREP or CUSP GREEN PREP.  Assuming you feel comfortable in your work experience knowledge** you can simply take the CUSP exam.

  5. CUSA and CSP credential holders have the opportunity to apply for the CUSP. There is no "grandfather" policy for receiving the CUSP - all credential holders are required to take and pass the exam.

**Highly recommended - but not a requirement ... A 2-Day Utility Safety Leadership review course has been developed by USOLN members. This education is designed to enhance job safety knowledge, leadership skills and to assist in preparedness for taking the CUSP exam.
